10 Best Link Building Tools (2026 Prices)

Compare 10 link building tools with prices checked on vendor pages in October 2026, plus the seat and credit limits that set what a working stack costs.

10 Best Link Building Tools (2026 Prices)
In this guide

The best link building tools in 2026 come down to three jobs: one tool to research links (Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking or Majestic), one to find and email the right person (Hunter.io plus BuzzStream or Pitchbox), and one to watch the links you win (Linkody or Google Search Console). The catch is that most roundups ranking today still quote old prices: Ahrefs Lite is $129 a month, not $99, Pitchbox Pro costs $300 a month billed monthly ($210 billed annually) and every plan needs a one-year commitment, and Respona, still sold to you as outreach software, now charges per placement instead.

My position after a decade in SEO and link building: buy fewer tools and read the limits, not the headline price. A working solo stack costs $227 a month at list price, and a three-person agency stack costs about $742 (pricing checked October 2026, maths below).

Everything here comes from each vendor’s own documentation and pricing pages, G2, Capterra and Trustpilot reviews, and Google’s Search Central and Search Console documentation, and none paid to be included.

Prices are the lowest paid plan billed monthly, in USD, from each vendor’s pricing page. Ratings are G2 scores with review counts, read in October 2026.

# Tool Best for From (monthly billing) G2 rating
1 Ahrefs Backlink research and competitor gaps $129 (Lite) 4.5 (722 reviews)
2 Semrush All-in-one SEO with backlink gap analysis $139 (SEO plan) 4.4 (4,293 reviews)
3 SE Ranking Agencies that want one cheaper suite $129 (Core) 4.7 (1,618 reviews)
4 Majestic Link-only data and Trust Flow $49.99 (Lite) 4.3 (73 reviews)
5 BuzzStream Outreach CRM for small teams $49 (Starter) 4.2 (165 reviews)
6 Pitchbox High-volume agency outreach $300 (Pro, 1-year commitment) 4.7 (99 reviews)
7 Hunter.io Finding and verifying emails $0 (Free), $49 (Starter) 4.4 (656 reviews)
8 BuzzSumo Content-led prospecting and journalists $199 (billed yearly only) 4.5 (107 reviews)
9 Linkody Monitoring links you have won $14.90 (Webmaster) 4.5 (4 reviews)
10 Google Search Console Free view of links Google reports Free 4.7 (516 reviews)

How this list was built

This list was built from the live Google results for “link building tools” in the US and UK, the AI Overview, the answer ChatGPT gives to the same question, the five top-ranking guides and each vendor’s pricing page. It keeps the tools that cover a real step of the job (research, contacts, outreach, monitoring) and drops three kinds: automated link creation software, which Google’s spam policies name as link spam; link sellers and marketplaces, which are services, not tools; and anything whose current price couldn’t be confirmed on the vendor’s own page.

No hands-on test scores here. Each review uses the vendor’s pricing page, its stated limits, and the G2 rating and recurring praise and complaints. Where a vendor’s page contradicts itself, the review says so.

The 10 tools, reviewed

1. Ahrefs

Ahrefs homepage

Best for: finding who links to your competitors and not to you.

Ahrefs is the research tool most link builders open first. Site Explorer shows a domain’s backlinks and referring domains, Link Intersect shows sites linking to several competitors but not you, and its Domain Rating and URL Rating scores are the shorthand most sellers quote.

Price: Starter $29, Lite $129, Standard $249, Advanced $449, Enterprise $1,499 a month. Extra users cost $40 a month on Lite and $60 on Standard. Annual billing saves “up to 17%”, but you arrange it through support. Pricing checked October 2026 on Ahrefs’ pricing page.

Watch out for: Lite gives 1,000 credits per user and does not include Content Explorer; Standard and up have unlimited credits. If you do content-led prospecting, Lite is the wrong plan.

What users say: 4.5/5 on G2 from 722 reviews. Praise centres on ease of use and backlink analysis; the top complaints are price and data accuracy. On Trustpilot it scores 2.2/5 from 322 reviews, mostly over account lockouts, usage limits and billing.

2. Semrush

Best for: teams that want keyword, site audit and backlink gap work in one login.

Semrush’s Backlink Gap compares your referring domains with up to several competitors, and its link building workflow lets you collect prospects and send outreach inside the suite. If you already pay for Semrush for keywords, test this before buying a second backlink tool.

Price: the pricing page now lists an SEO plan at $139 a month ($117.33 billed annually), Starter (SEO + AI Search) at $199, Pro+ at $299, Advanced on request, and a free plan. Additional users start at $45 a month. Pricing checked October 2026. The Pro, Guru and Business names many roundups still quote are gone from the page.

Watch out for: per-user pricing adds up fast for an outreach team.

What users say: 4.4/5 on G2 from 4,293 reviews. Features and ease of use lead the praise; price-related complaints (“expensive”, “high pricing”, “high costs”) outnumber every other theme.

3. SE Ranking

SE Ranking homepage

Best for: small agencies that want an all-in-one suite at a lower seat cost.

SE Ranking covers backlink research, a backlink gap view and monitoring, plus rank tracking and audits for client reporting.

Price: Core $129 a month ($103.20 billed annually) with one manager seat, Growth $279 ($223.20) with three, Enterprise custom. Extra seats start at $16. The pricing page describes keyword, competitor and backlink research as “unlimited”. Pricing checked October 2026.

Watch out for: reviewers flag paid add-ons on top of the base plan.

What users say: 4.7/5 on G2 from 1,618 reviews. Ease of use and value for agencies lead; recurring complaints are missing features, cost, usage caps and add-on pricing.

4. Majestic

Best for: a cheap second opinion on a link profile.

Majestic does one thing: links. Its Trust Flow and Citation Flow scores are useful filters when vetting a prospect, as long as you remember they are third-party scores, like Moz’s Domain Authority, not anything Google uses.

Price: Lite $49.99 a month, Pro $99.99, API $399.99, excluding VAT. Annual billing brings Lite to $41.67 a month. Pricing checked October 2026.

Watch out for: no keyword or traffic data, so it can’t tell you whether a linking site gets visitors.

What users say: 4.3/5 on G2 from 73 reviews. Reviewers value Trust Flow and the size of the index; they complain about a dated interface and a learning curve.

5. BuzzStream

BuzzStream homepage

Best for: a small team that needs one shared record of who was contacted and what they said.

BuzzStream is an outreach CRM: it stores prospects and contacts, sends sequences and keeps the conversation history, so two people never pitch the same editor. It pairs well with a clear process for getting more replies to outreach.

Price: the main pricing table lists Starter at $49 a month (1 user, 500 contacts), Growth at $174 (3 users, 25,000 contacts) and Professional at $424 (6 users, 100,000 contacts). Prepaying 12 months gets one month free. Pricing checked October 2026. Note: a comparison table lower on the same page still shows older tiers from $19, so confirm at checkout. The $24 starting price quoted in most roundups is not on the page.

What users say: 4.2/5 on G2 from 165 reviews. Time saving is the main praise; the most common complaint is an outdated, cluttered interface.

6. Pitchbox

Pitchbox homepage

Best for: agencies running outreach at volume across several clients.

Pitchbox combines prospecting, sequences, deliverability tools and link monitoring in one platform.

Price: Pro $300 a month billed monthly or $210 billed annually (2 email accounts, 2,000 outreach emails, 1,000 prospecting searches a month, 1,000 monitored links), Advanced $600 or $420, Scale $1,200 or $825. The page says all plans require a one-year commitment regardless of billing frequency. Expert-led implementation costs $2,000 on Pro, included with annual billing. Pricing checked October 2026 on Pitchbox’s pricing page.

Watch out for: G2’s listing still shows Pro “from $165”, which is out of date against the vendor page.

What users say: 4.7/5 on G2 from 99 reviews, with cost rated at the top of G2’s price scale, and 4.6/5 on Capterra from 42 reviews. Capterra reviewers praise automated follow-ups, running several campaigns in one place and pipeline reporting; the repeated complaints are price, a complicated interface with a learning curve, and prospect searches that return irrelevant sites.

7. Hunter.io

Hunter.io homepage

Best for: finding the editor’s address and checking it before you send.

Hunter’s Domain Search, Email Finder and Email Verifier cover the contact step. Verifying before you send protects your sending domain.

Price: Free (50 credits a month), Starter $49 ($34 billed yearly, 2,000 credits), Growth $149 ($104, 10,000 credits), Scale $299 ($209, 25,000 credits). A found email costs 1 credit and a verification 0.5, so Starter covers about 1,333 found-and-verified contacts a month. Pricing checked October 2026.

What users say: 4.4/5 on G2 from 656 reviews. Praise is for simplicity and reliable verification; complaints are that credits run out fast and coverage is thin for small or new companies.

8. BuzzSumo

BuzzSumo homepage

Best for: content-led link building and digital PR, where you need to know what earns links and which journalists cover a topic.

BuzzSumo shows which content gets shared and linked, plus journalist and mention monitoring that feeds unlinked mention outreach.

Price: Content Creation $199 a month, PR & Comms $299, Suite $499, all billed yearly; Enterprise $999 a month, annual only. A trial is offered; there is no free plan. Pricing checked October 2026.

What users say: 4.5/5 on G2 from 107 reviews. Content research is the praise; an overwhelming interface is the most repeated complaint.

9. Linkody

Linkody homepage

Best for: cheap, simple alerts when a link you earned or paid for disappears.

Linkody tracks the links pointing to your sites and flags lost links and attribute changes, which is the step most teams skip after a campaign ends.

Price: Webmaster $14.90 a month (2 sites, 500 monitored links), Advanced $24.90, Pro $49.90 (20 sites, 5,000 links, 3 users), Agency $99.90, Agency XL $153.90. Annual billing cuts Webmaster to $11.20. 30-day trial, no card needed. Pricing checked October 2026.

What users say: 4.5/5 on G2 from 4 reviews. Reviewers like the easy setup and tracking; the one repeated complaint is occasional false link alerts that need a manual check.

10. Google Search Console

Google Search Console homepage

Best for: a free, first-party view of your top linking sites, linked pages and anchor text.

The Links report is backlink data straight from Google itself. It is also where you would use the disavow tool if you ever need it. Read the limits in the section below before you treat it as a full list.

Price: free.

What users say: 4.7/5 on G2 from 516 reviews. Users praise the insight and data accuracy; the top complaint is the 1,000-row cap and short data retention.

Pick by the step that slows you down, not by brand.

If you are Start with Add when it hurts
A solo SEO or founder Ahrefs Lite or Majestic Lite, Hunter Free, Search Console BuzzStream Starter once you pitch more than a few sites a week
A content or digital PR team BuzzSumo plus Hunter Ahrefs Standard for Content Explorer
A small agency (2 to 5 people) SE Ranking Growth or Ahrefs Standard, BuzzStream Growth Linkody Pro to report lost links to clients
An agency sending thousands of emails a month Pitchbox A dedicated backlink tool for vetting

Yes, for a small site. Google Search Console shows your own links for free, Ahrefs offers a free tier (“Ahrefs Free”) with limited Site Explorer and Site Audit data for sites you verify, Semrush has a free plan, and Hunter gives 50 credits a month, about 33 found-and-verified contacts. Linkody’s 30-day trial needs no card.

What free plans won’t give you is competitor research at depth. That is the first thing worth paying for.

The five pages ranking at the top for this keyword were read in full for this post. These are the points none of them covers, each checked against a primary source.

The prices in most roundups are out of date

Every price below was read on the vendor’s own page in October 2026 and compared with what the top-ranking guides print.

Tool What top guides quote Vendor page, October 2026
Ahrefs Lite $99 a month $129 a month
Semrush entry plan Pro, $129.95 a month SEO plan, $139 a month
Pitchbox $195 a month Pro $300 billed monthly ($210 billed annually), one-year commitment on every plan
BuzzStream $24 a month $49 a month (main pricing table)
Respona $99 a month software plan Software plans gone; priced per placement

What to do: never budget from a roundup, including this one after a few months. Open the pricing page, check the billing period, and look for commitment terms before you start a trial.

What a working stack really costs: seats and credits

List prices hide the two things that decide your bill: how many people need a login, and how many lookups you burn. Here is what three realistic stacks cost at monthly billing (pricing checked October 2026):

Stack Tools Monthly cost
Lean Majestic Lite $49.99 + Hunter Free $0 + Linkody Webmaster $14.90 + Search Console $0 $64.89
Solo Ahrefs Lite $129 + Hunter Starter $49 + BuzzStream Starter $49 + Search Console $0 $227
3-person agency Ahrefs Standard $249 + 2 extra users at $60 ($120) + BuzzStream Growth $174 + Hunter Growth $149 + Linkody Pro $49.90 $741.90

Three limits change the maths more than the sticker price:

  1. Ahrefs Lite caps you at 1,000 credits per user and leaves out Content Explorer. Heavy prospecting pushes you to Standard ($249).
  2. Hunter charges 1.5 credits for a found and verified address. Starter’s 2,000 credits cover about 1,333 contacts, not 2,000.
  3. Pitchbox locks you in for a year. The minimum spend on Pro is $2,520 billed annually or $3,600 billed monthly.

And keep perspective: the software is the small line. Placements themselves cost far more per link, as our breakdown of link building pricing shows. A tool budget bigger than your placement budget is upside down.

Two well-known names are no longer what the guides say

Respona is now a placement service. Google’s AI Overview for this keyword still recommends Respona as outreach software for “personalized AI-assisted pitching”, and one top guide still lists a $99 software plan. Respona’s pricing page now sells done-for-you placements by the piece, from $100 (DR 20+) to $500 (DR 60+), with volume discounts. If you want software you run yourself, it is no longer that.

HARO is back, under a new owner. One ranking guide lists “HARO (Connectively)” as a free tool. Cision shut Connectively, the renamed HARO, on 9 December 2024, then sold HARO to Featured.com on 15 April 2025; Featured relaunched it and told users emails would restart on 22 April 2025. If a guide still calls it Connectively, its research predates April 2025.

What Google’s own docs say no tool can fix

Search Console is a sample, not the full list. The AI Overview calls it “the primary free source of truth” for crawled backlinks. Google’s own help page says the Links report “isn’t a comprehensive list”, caps tables at 1,000 rows (exports up to 100,000), and doesn’t say whether a link is nofollow. Use it to confirm Google sees a link; use a paid index to see everything else.

Tools don’t make a link compliant. Google’s spam policies (updated 28 August 2026) list “using automated programs or services to create links to your site” and buying links for ranking purposes as link spam. The same page says paid links for advertising or sponsorship are fine when marked rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". One top guide lists paid links as a strategy option inside a tool without saying any of this. No outreach tool changes that rule: a paid placement should carry rel="sponsored", whichever software found the site.

Verdict: buy for the bottleneck, not the brand

If you are on your own, start with Ahrefs Lite or Majestic Lite, Hunter and Search Console, and add BuzzStream only when tracking replies in a spreadsheet starts to cost you deals. If you run a small agency, price per seat and per credit before per plan; that is where the bill grows. Pitchbox suits agencies that will use it every day for a year, nobody else.

Whatever you pick, decide what links you need before you pick software. A clear backlink strategy tells you whether your bottleneck is research, contacts or follow-up, and that answer picks the tool.
